Lib Dems show nothing but contempt for Dudden Hill residents over David Clues saga

The Lib Dem Councillor who has been living in Brighton since 2011 has finally resigned.

The Lib Dems have yet to apologise to the people of Brent and have an arrangement where his allowance has gone to the Brent Liberal Democrats, funding things like their party political leaflets while his attendance to Council meetings has been woeful and engagement with residents and local police zilch LINK

The Lib Dems have shown nothing but contempt for the residents of Dudden Hill – The local Brent Lib Dem Nick Clegg sorry moment has yet to come.

An article reporting the that Brent Liberal Democrat Councillor has been living in Brighton since December 2011 in the Argus local paper in Brighton has attracted a flurry of comments – LINK

Some of which include;

“Maybe he should change his name to the Rev Clueless”

“Party: Liberal Democrats”

“sadly these days its all at the end about snouts in the trough. its the claiming of allowances that give the game away, it would be intresting to hear what next sundays sermon is about, avarice or self delusion spring to mind”

“and we’re supposed to look up to religious leaders for setting high moral standards?”

A comment in his defence said,

“in the Despatches episode he made it clear that the allowance goes back to the Lib Dems – not to him personally.”

The Lib Dems have shown terrible leadership on this issue and have totally failed to grasp the seriousness of this omnishambles.

Brent Liberal Democrat Meltdown

bird downThe Willesden and Brent Times is reporting that a whopping seven out of their 16 Councillors plan to step down at the next local elections – LINK

The Party locally looks to be in complete meltdown as the Independent reported  in their article titled “Lib Dems suffer plunge in party membership” (LINK) that the largest drop in membership of the Liberal Democrats came in Brent where they “saw 42 per cent of activists quit in the space of 12 months.”

The Times article also says that my Co Councillor of the Liberal Democrats, David Clues, who has been living in Brighton since December 2011 will not be putting himself up for election in 2014 in Brent. He still refuses to resign despite this scandal!

Snowy Postcard to Cllr David Clues

While Dudden Hill is covered in snow, I thought I would take this opportunity to remind Liberal Democrat Councillor for the ward about the area he ‘represents’.

Last night, the Liberal Democrat Councillor yet again failed to turn up to the Full Council meeting. However, I understand the difficulties in travelling to Brent from Brighton in this difficult weather. I suppose the Liberal Democrats aren’t the only fluffy substance around that cause the country to grind to a halt.

MISSING: Brent Liberal Democrats!

The Brent Liberal Democrats are all over the place…. literally!

It’s reported in the Willesden and Brent Times that Liberal Democrat Councillor for Willesden Green Ward Gavin Sneddon has moved out of Brent.

Personally, I do not see an issue with his move so much, as he has to be fair, been attending meetings, area forums etc in Brent. He is reported to be living in Barnet, which isn’t actually far away from Brent.

On the other hand, we have Lib Dem Cllr David Clues. He has been living in Brighton since 8th December 2011. He has not been responding to emails, has no surgery in the ward, does not attend ward meetings such as Ward Panel with the local Police team, does not attend ward priority setting meetings, Ward working meetings where we have been fleshing out ideas as to what we want in Dudden Hill.

The question of attendance to Council meetings of Brent Liberal Democrat Councillors has also attracted widespread criticism in the past. Indeed recently, they’ve even developed a liberal approach to meetings and gone AWOL in the middle of meetings.

Another Brent Liberal Democrat Councillor is also rumoured to have moved out of Brent. If proven true, it will mean that nearly 20% of the Brent Liberal Democrat Group do not live in Brent.

A by-election in Dudden Hill imminent?

Dudden Hill Liberal Democrat Councillor David Clues has been living in Brighton since 8th December 2011 LINK

In a show of contempt to the Brent Council Taxpayer, the Liberals look like they will be holding a Council by-election sometime in the next couple of months in Dudden Hill, when they had the choice to hold it on the same day as the London Mayoral elections.

By-election costs come out of the Council’s general fund.

There was a flurry of activity in Dudden Hill today for the first time since May 2010. I was out on the doorstep, as I am every Saturday, when I even spied Sarah Teather. A couple of people living near Gladstone Park have mentioned that they have been canvassed by the Liberals.

Interestingly, I spoke to a Lib Dem activist who had come over from Kensington to help out the Lib Dems in Dudden Hill. He first of all looked surprised and was impressed with seeing a young Councillor. He vented his disappointment at the way in which the Government was handling the economy and that the richest landowners in society had the means to pay off debt with a one off payment rather than targeting welfare and disability benefits. I asked that you can raise that with the MP that is there today. He said I’ve seen her briefly today – but this sort of thing is “too advanced” for her. At which point we exchanged contact details. Says a lot when Lib Dem activists feel more comfortable talking to Labour Councillors than Lib Dem MPs, Councillors and Government Ministers!

This level of activity from the Liberals is unprecedented in my tenure as a local Councillor, which suggests to me that a by-election in Dudden Hill is coming soon.

Barnhill By-election on May 3rd 2012, but there should be one in Dudden Hill too

Following my blogpost here LINK – Judith Beckman has today officially resigned as a Councillor serving the London Borough of Brent in Barnhill Ward.

A by-election vote will be held on May 3rd 2012 to minimise the cost of an election to the Brent taxpayer. Judith moved to Plymouth in January and decided she would stand down in May so that Brent would not have to foot the avoidable extra cost of having a by-election on an odd date. With a major election already happening in May to elect the Mayor of London it makes perfect sense to have the election on this date.

I now think it is time for Dudden Hill Liberal Democrat Councillor David Clues, who has been living in Brighton since 8th December 2011 to resign so that a by-election can be held in Dudden Hill on May 3rd 2012

EXCLUSIVE: Lib Dem stooge planted as concerned resident in local papers

A quick search has revealed that Alison Hopkins, a “local resident” on the front page of The Brent and Kilburn Times condemning the change to waste and recycling in Brent as “rubbish” is a well known Party Political Brent Liberal Democrat activist and was a candidate for the Party in the May 2010 local elections in the Stonebridge Ward.

LINK: Lib Dem anti-recycling front page coverage

The story was printed on Thursday 13th October,  around a week into the new bin system coming into Brent.

Figures for January 2012 show that the recycling rate with the new in the Borough is at 43%. This is up from 23% in January 2011. A whopping increase of 20%! With the Government shifting landfill tax increases to Councils, it means that less money is being use by Brent Council to bury trash in the ground.

In addition, the absent Dudden Hill Liberal Democrat Councillor David Clues who lives in Brighton also speaks out against the bin system.

Dudden Hill Lib Dem Councillor moves to Brighton, but it’s business as usual for Dudden Hill Labour

The Willesden and Brent Times has reported that one of my co-Dudden Hill Councillors, David Clues is living in Brighton.

A statement from Cllr Clues can be found here (LINK). If he is genuinely moving in transition and moving to and from Dudden Hill and Brighton, making appointments to see residents and available to contact through phone email and post and can make it work, then fair play to him.

After coming a miserable fourth in the Kenton by-election (behind even an independent candidate) and seeing their vote collapse in the marginal Wembley Central by-election less than a month ago, I’d be surprised if the Brent Liberal Democrats called a by-election. Instead they will be sweating away if it gets close to six months and Dudden Hill Lib Dem Councillor, David Clues has not attended a Council meeting, which is the minimum requirement for him to keep his seat.

Residents have been raising this to me for a while but I was personally uncertain of his whereabouts. I’ve just gone about my own business in representing my people in the way that I best see fit and not bothered to worry about the Brent Liberal Democrats and I will continue to do so. Calling a by-election is in the hands of Lib Dem hierarchy and Cllr Clues, so Aslam and I will go about our own business.

In October 2011, a Dudden Hill resident approached me and said “Looks like we’ll have a by-election in the area soon”. “No I said”. He was shocked when I told him, as long as he turns up to a Council meeting every six months, he can keep his seat.

Dudden Hill residents on Twitter said:

“This is ridiculous. Where are his loyalties?”

“This is disgusting. What, if anything, can be done to oust him?”

“I think it’s shocking to be honest”

Another tweeted:

“He’s pocketing 7K which he will of course pay back… #Git”

I recently spoke to an ex-Councillor who once represented the Neasden area who said that David is a ‘left’ thinker and will probably in the inside be dismayed at what the Liberals are doing in Government. I predict that after he ceases to be a Brent Councillor (that is if he doesn’t run for election again in 2014), he will not be renewing his Liberal Democrat membership in Brighton.

What a last few days it has been

It was a horrible morning as we learnt the result of the Brent Central Parliamentary vote. We were absolutely distraught at losing such an inspiring MP in Dawn. Barry Gardiner and Glenda Jackson’s result did soften the blow as Hampstead and Kilburn elected Glenda, and Brent North elected Barry.

Yesterday at 4PM the Council results for Dudden Hill Ward was announced. It was the second result announced after the Willesden Green Ward announcement where there was no change from 2006. At the Dudden Hill Count table, the Labour pile looked marginally bigger than the Lib Dem stack.

Before they’re announced, the Candidates and our Agents already know the results. We were called behind the count table to look at the ballot papers that were sorted into the pile where the ballots were disputable.

I looked at the results sheets… I was ahead of two of my Lib Dem opponents! After we had all agreed where the disputed papers should go, the result was finalised. I had got in by 50 votes.

But the day wasn’t over. As the results were announced Ward by Ward, we were making gains all across Brent. The final result was astonishing. Brent Labour now have 40 Councillors in Brent to 17 Lib Dems and 6 Conservatives.

Commiserations to all my fellow Dudden Hill candidates of all parties who were unsuccessful on this occasion and congratulations to Aslam Choudry and David Clues for also being elected as Dudden Hill Councillors.  This has been a hard fought campaign and many had no sleep for two days. The actual campaign was exhausting. I’m sure all candidates are sporting a ‘campaign calf’ from being on their feet constantly, knocking on doors, talking to people, canvassing for support.

Lastly, thank you for all your support, to every voter, to every leaflet deliverer, to every donater, to my fellow candidates, to the A-Team, to Dawn & her team, to volunteers, everyone else that helped and to you.

I look forward to the challenges that the next four years will bring – and I look forward to serving Dudden Hill and Brent.
